Itinerary

Day 1 – Meet your trip guides and fellow hikers at 8 a.m. for your orientation, then take a bush plane flight in to the Talkeetna Mountains to the hike starting point where your gear will be packed on to the yaks and the hiking will begin. Spend the afternoon hiking and climbing to the tops of ridges that overlook the Susitna Valley and the Alaska Range. Spend the evening with your fellow hikers and guides around the campfire. Day 2 – The yaks are repacked and we begin hiking farther into the interior of the Talkeetna Mountains. We hike across rolling tundra encountering thick patches of tasty, wild blueberries as we watch for bear, moose, caribou, and beaver. Spend the evening around the campfire enjoying the comraderie and conversation. (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Day 3 – Trek up the valley, ascending to a pass with lakes and rocky outcrops to camp. This afternoon summit the highest mountain in the area and be rewarded with unparalleled views of the Alaska Range, Talkeetna Mountains, and the vast Susitna Valley. Descend the peak and return to camp for the evening. (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Day 4 – Traverse across the mountains, circling a valley with the Talkeetna River below, and crossing another pass before we descend into a remote lush valley where we will set up camp for the night. . (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Day 5 – After breakfast, begin your ascent up a steep slope to a high pass with fabulous views of the Alaska Range. Then trek down into a huge valley to tonight’s lakeside camp. (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Day 6 – Spend the day hiking in the same area, enjoying the spectacular scenery and looking for Dall Sheep and caribou. (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Day 1 – Arrive in Fresno Meet your hiking guides and fellow adventurers and for your trip orientation over happy hour.  (Dinner on your own). 

Day 2 – Transfer to the trailhead at 7,300 ft. elevation where you’ll meet your pack horses and their guides as they load all of our gear onto the horses for the journey. Begin the 6 mile hike to beautiful Staniford Lake in the Ansel Adams Wilderness, arriving about twilight at your first camp where our guides will begin preparing dinner while you fish, swim, and relax. Spend this evening stargazing and talking around the campfire. (lunch, dinner)

Day 3 – Today’s hike is a hard 11 miles as you go up the switchback trail that takes you over Post Peak Pass at 10,750 ft. elevation and into Yosemite National Park to camp at Lake 10K at 10, 005 ft. elevation. From camp you have a magnificent views of Isberg Peak – 10,996 ft. elev. Long Mountain – 11,502 ft. elev., and Forester Peak at 12,057 ft. elev. (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Day 4 – Today’s 11-mile downhill hike descends 2,500 ft. elevation through the drainage systems of the Merced and Tuolomne Rivers that drain the Park. Camp tonight at Merced Lake 7,300 ft. elev. (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Day 5 – Today your westward 7 ½ mile hike with gradual ups and downs takes you toward the iconic Half Dome, which you will climb tomorrow, to tonight’s camp in the Sunrise Creek area – 7,200 ft. elev. (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Day 6 – Today’s roundtrip hike and climb up Half Dome today is very challenging, but rewarding. Before sunrise this morning you’ll start the 3 ¾ mile hike to the beginning of the Half Dome Trail. From there, the distance to the top of the imposing granite dome is 2 ½ very tough miles. The Dome rises 4,800 feet above the Yosemite Valley floor. To reach the top, you’ll scramble up the first half of the route on the switchbacks that have been carved into the granite face. Then you’ll begin climbing a semi-permanent cable handrail system for the remaining 900 ft to the top – 8,836 ft. elev. At the top of the Half Dome you are rewarded with spectacular views of the Park and the Yosemite backcountry.  After lunch on the summit of Half Dome, you’ll descend and hike back to camp.  (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Day 7– Today you’ll hike another 8 ½ miles along the John Muir Trail, passing through the remote, gorgeous High Sierra Loop area on your way to Lower Cathedral Lake – 9,288 ft. elevation, to camp for the night. (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Day 8– After breakfast you’ll break camp and hike the last 4 ½ miles to a trailhead in Tuolumne Meadows, the end of your great traverse across Yosemite. From the trailhead you are driven down into Yosemite Valley which you have viewed for the last week on your trek through the high country. Return to Fresno where the tour will end. (breakfast, lunch)

Trip Name: Introduction to Mountain Biking: North Rim Grand Canyon

You’ll begin today’s spectacular 10 mile ride through forests and meadows on Jeep roads and a short doubletrack section on the Arizona Trail (stretches from the Arizona-Utah border to the Arizona-Mexico border) to your camp on the East Rim of the Grand Canyon. Day 2 – Today you’ll travel into the Grand Canyon National Park for a very scenic, short dayhike along the Canyon’s North Rim with awesome views across the Canyon. Return to your East Rim camp, and a campfire under the starry Northern Arizona skies. (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Day 3 – Today’s 25 mile ride through the forest backcountry on jeep roads and narrow tracks used as fire breaks takes you to your camp and the dramatic vistas and Canyon formations at North Timp Point. (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Day 5 – Today’s ride along the next part of the Rainbow Rim Trail takes you to Timp Point and the last view of the Grand Canyon on this trip. This 5-day tour of the eastern end of Death Valley offers riders many opportunities to marvel at the austere beauty of this extreme landscape with its abrupt, high mountains juxtaposed with low, flat desert playas while riding on relatively flat roads and desert-varnished tracks. Itinerary

Day 1 – Meet the tour in Las Vegas. Travel to Death Valley National Park and up to Dante’s View, elevation 5,475 ft. to view the highest and lowest point in Death Valley – Badwater Basin far below at 282 feet below sea level, and Telescope Peak at 11,049 ft. elevation in the distance rising far above the Valley – where you’ll begin today’s 20 mile ride of which 13 miles is downhill. If time permits, you’ll also hike from Zabriskie Point down through multicolored borax badlands before being met by the sag wagon and taken to your base camp at Furnace Creek. (lunch, dinner)

Day 2 – Today you’ll get on your bike and follow the Funeral Mountains for 36 miles to Scotty’s Castle, built in the early 20th century by a Chicago insurance titan as his own desert retreat, which was later taken over by an opportunistic character named Walter Scott – Desert Valley Scotty. The 32,000 square foot Spanish style vacation villa became known as Scotty’s’Castle and is now run by the National Park Service. Shuttle back to camp. (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Day 3 – Today you’ll ride Artist’s Drive. This twisting one way road is a visual kaleidoscope of color as multicolored bands of rock – pink, green, purple, brown, black – permeate the landscape of the Black Mountains. (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Day 4 – Today you’ll head off to explore the big sand dunes, the most photographed dunes in the US, at Stovepipe Wells. From Stovepipe Wells, you’ll be shuttled to Daylight Pass where you’ll ride down into the abandoned ghost town of Rhyolite, Nevada, the site of movies with themes on the old west and modern serial killers. After the ride you’ll travel to camp in spectacular Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Day 1 – Meet the tour in Las Vegas. Travel to Death Valley National Park where you’ll ride Artist’s Drive. This twisting one way paved road is a visual kaleidoscope of color as multicolored bands of rock – pink, green, purple, brown, black – permeate the landscape of the Black Mountains. before being met by the shuttle and taken to your camp in Panamint Valley on the western edge of Death Valley. (lunch, dinner)

Day 2 – Today you’ll shuttle a short distance to Darwin Wash where you’ll begin riding. After a steady climb of around 2,000 feet, you’ll descend to China Springs where you’ll begin a strenuous technical hike down cottonwood lined Darwin Canyon to Darwin Falls for a swim under the 80 ft. waterfall. After hiking back out of the canyon, you’ll ride 12+ miles back down to camp. (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Day 3 – Today you’ll travel east to the old ghost town of Harrisburg on Emigrant Canyon Road where you’ll begin riding past the Eureka Mine up an old jeep trail to Aguereberry Point, named after a Basque prospector named Peter Aguereberry. The views across Death Valley are amazing from this vantage point. From Aguereberry Point you’ll descend to Harrisburg for lunch, then back down to Emigrant, and on to Stovepipe Wells for a total riding distance today of about 40 miles. After a refreshing break, you’ll head off to hike the huge Mesquite Flats Sand Dunes, the most photographed dunes in the U.S. After the hike you’ll travel to your camp on the eastern edge of Death Valley (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Day 4 – Today you’ll have a couple of trail options, based on trail conditions and group preference. One option is the 10 mile very strenuous climb (5-10% grade) up to Red Pass, elevation 5,220 feet and the awesome 5,800 ft. descent between the narrowing walls of Titus Canyon down to the valley floor for a total of more than 26 miles. The second trail option is the 16 mile out and back ride up to the top of the Chloride Cliff for a spectacular view of Badwater Basin, the lowest point in Death Valley elevation -282 feet, Telescope Peak, the highest point in Death Valley at 11,049 ft. elevation, and even Mt. Whitney in the high Sierra Nevada Mountains, the highest peak in the lower 48 states at 14,505 ft. elevation. (breakfast, lunch dinner)

Day 5 – Today you’ll leave Death Valley National Park and travel east through the abandoned ghost town of Rhyolite, Nevada to the Red Rock National Conservation Area just 25 miles west of Los Vegas. This afternoon you’ll enjoy riding on the fast Dead Horse Loop singletrack, the first National Off Road Bicycle Association trail in Red Rock. (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Day 6 – This morning you’ll ride the rugged Mustang Trail created by Nevada’s wild horses more than a century ago, and then ride down to the town of Blue Diamond. After lunch you’ll return to Las Vegas where the tour will end. (breakfast, lunch)

Itinerary – 4 Day Tour

Day 1 – Meet the tour in Reno, Nevada. Travel south through the Sierra Nevada into California to the old west town of Markleeville, California where today’s ride will begin. A few miles out of Markleeville you begin to climb toward Monitor Pass, 8,314 ft. elevation, the first of the many mountain passes you’ll cross over on this tour. As you descend from the pass you see the western side of the arid Great Basin, a vast enclosed drainage system that stretches from northern Utah into Nevada and California, with no outlet to the ocean. After the long descent you’ll end the day high in the Sierra at Walker and Coleville. (lunch, dinner)

Day 2 – Begin the day with a climb up and over Sonora Pass, elevation 9,624 ft. then descend through classic Sierra Nevada views along the wide Stanislaus River to forested Dardanelle. (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Day 3 – Shuttle to the gold mining town of Angels Camp. From Angels Camp, you’ll ride to Calaveras Big Tree State Park where you’ll break for lunch and marvel at the groves of magnificent, giant sequoias. On the ride this afternoon you’ll enter the Ebbetts Pass Scenic Byway and begin the long climb toward Ebbetts Pass which you’ll reach tomorrow. (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Day 4 – Continue the gorgeous ride up to Ebbetts Pass, elevation 8,751 ft., with views of granite outcrops, ancient volcanic peaks, glacier carved valleys, and deep river canyons. From Ebbetts Pass, you’ll descend through forests along the beautiful Carson River to Markleeville. From Markleeville you’ll travel back to Reno where the tour will end. (breakfast, lunch)

Day 6 – Enter the Ebbetts Pass Scenic Byway and continue the gorgeous ride up to Ebbetts Pass, elevation 8,751 ft., with views of granite outcrops, ancient volcanic peaks, glacier carved valleys, and deep river canyons. With its vibrantly colored layers of earth and weirdly shaped towers of erodable sediment capped with harder rock, called hoodoos, it is a smaller version of the much larger Bryce Canyon that you will cycle into tomorrow.

Day 2 – Today’s ride takes you deeper into the Dixie National Forest along Scenic Byway 12 to Red Canyon with its striking red limestone formations where you’ll ride the Red Canyon Bicycle Trial with uninterrupted opportunities to stop and admire this vibrant geological wonderland. Day 1 – Meet the tour in Moab, Utah. Today you’ll ride the 14 mile Gemini Bridges Trail northwest of Moab. The trail is named for two large arches that have been carved into the canyon walls by erosion . This trail is a fun introduction to Moab mountain biking. You’ll ride through areas of pinyon pine and juniper trees, open flats, canyons, distinct rock formations like Gooneybird Rock, sandy washes, and steep sections of loose rock and slickrock. You’ll have the option of riding or shuttling back to town. (lunch, dinner)

Day 2 – Today you’ll ride the backroads out of Moab into Arches National Park and hike in a rugged area known as The Windows where you’ll marvel at amazing formations like Parade of Elephants, Turret Arch, North and South Windows, Cove of Caves Double Arch. After lunch, you can ride or shuttle a few miles to the most photographed natural arch in the world – Delicate Arch. (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Day 3 – This morning you’ll shuttle west-southwest out of Moab to the magnificent Canyonlands National Park to the Island in the Sky, a sandstone mesa that is 1,000 feet higher than the surrounding terrain. From here you’ll ride zigzag on the Shafer Trail down off this dramatic mesa, with fantastic views of the winding Colorado River, onto the plateau more than 1,000 feet below. After a stop for lunch overlooking the river, you’ll shuttle back to Moab. (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Day 4 – Today you’ll ride the flat and gradually ascending slickrock and sandy washes on the Monitor & Merrimac Trail, one of Moab’s classic mountain bike rides. The ride is spectacular and punctuated by the dramatic Determination Towers and Monitor and Merrimac Buttes – named in honor of the ironclad U.S. naval destroyer ships. (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Day 5 – You’ll travel east of Moab on the Sand Flats Recreation Area jeep road up into the La Sal Mountains where you’ll begin a descent back toward Moab. You’ll then ride the Slickrock Practice Loop where you’ll have the opportunity to test all the riding skills you’ve learned this week on a smaller area just off Moab’s most famous and challenging trail. Day 6 – You’ll cap off the week with a fun ride on the Klondike Bluffs Trail. This is a 10 mile out and back ride on jeep road and slickrock, complete with dinosaur footprints. It is a gentle climb up to the edge of Arches National Park with spectacular views of the Klondike Bluffs. Keeping in mind that what goes up must come down, after taking in the view at the top, you’ll have a screaming downhill ride back to the trailhead. Your tour ends this afternoon as you are shuttled back to Moab. (breakfast, lunch)

Travel to the Hans Flat on the western boundary of Canyonlands National Park where you’ll begin riding on rough, high clearance 4X4 roads through the Orange Cliffs toward the otherworldly landscape and terrain of The Maze District, the most rugged and remote area of the Canyonlands where the nearest paved road is more than 50 miles away. You’ll descend the switchbacked Flint Trail into the Maze and end today’s 30 mile ride at the awesome Maze Overlook. (lunch, dinner)

Day 2 – Today you’ll don your fanny pack for a strenuous 10 mile hike (involves some steep rock scrambling) down into South Fork Horse Canyon to the ancient Harvest Scene pictographs, painted by ancient peoples sometime from 2,000 to 8,000 years ago. After a bit of exploration here you’ll hike and scramble out of the canyon to camp near the base of Chimney Rock. (breakfast, lunch, and dinner)

Day 3 – Today you’ll have a challenging 5 mile ride from the Chimney Rock to the red rock towers of The Doll House in the Land of Standing Rocks where you’ll get to explore some well preserved ancient ruins and granaries. If there is enough time after exploring and if the group feels like doing so, you’ll do a strenuous hike that descends 1,200 ft. in 2 ½ miles down to Spanish Bottom on the banks the Colorado River (just upstream from the renowned whitewater section of Cataract Canyon) before riding back to Chimney Rock. Day 4 – Today you’ll ride 27 amazing miles in the Orange Cliffs area across the unlikely grassy plain of Waterhole Flat, through rugged Teapot Canyon with its challenging stepped slickrock walls to the old Chaffin family Cowboy Camp where they ran cattle until 1944 when they sold the area to the National Parks. Day 2 – Today you’ll travel a short distance to the southern edge of the Aquarius Plateau to ride some of the doubletrack and singletrack along part of the Great Western Trail through alpine forests and meadows around pristine lakes before descending more than 4,000 ft. through forest and high desert, passing some amazing ancient Anasazi ruins, to Escalante. Day 3 – From the northern Aquarius Plateau you’ll take on 15-25 miles of extended technical ascents and descents as you ride remote rugged single track on the Great Western Trail back toward Escalante with a short hike at picturesque Posey Lake before getting back on the bike for the final descent back to your cabin. Day 4 – This morning you’ll ride and bike portage the challenging Hodge Podge section of the Great Western Trail, then ascend the spectacular winding Hell’s Backbone Trail up to the Hell’s Backbone Bridge hanging between sheer cliffs over a deep chasm with views to the Aquarius Plateau to the north, and over Box-Death Hollow Wilderness to the south. This afternoon you’ll hike the sandy trail to the beautiful 128 ft. Lower Calf Creek Falls. (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Day 5 – This morning you’ll have a steep climb on loose scree up to Barney Top at 10,557 ft. elevation. After reaching Barney Top you’ll traverse open meadows, pine and aspen forests before descending to the Powell Point Trailhead. The trail to Powell Point is bumpy with tree roots and deep depressions as it winds and twists through thick stands of aspen and pine before it becomes rockier and ends at a turnaround at the eastern edge of Table Cliff Plateau. From the turnaround you’ll hike a half mile out to Powell Point, Named for Major John Wesley Powell and used as lookout point by mapping expeditions in the late 1800s. At 10,188 ft. elevation it offers stupendous, unobstructed views of southern Utah. After admiring the well-earned view over lunch, you’ll ride back to the trailhead and enjoy an awesome descent down to Pine Lake. (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Day 6 – From Pine Lake you’ll shuttle west toward Red Canyon to ride the classic Thunder Mountain Trail Class 4 difficulty singletrack where you’ll climb past hoodoo formations to the highpoint on the trail then descend a ridge along loose rocky switchbacks into the canyon to the trailhead. At the end of the 9 mile ride you’ll return to Ruby’s Inn where the tour will end. Return transfer to Las Vegas. (breakfast, lunch)

From Norris you’ll head east and then south to the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River to see the spectacular Lower and Upper Yellowstone Falls. Day 3 – Float downstream to the glacial sand dunes with views of the peaks of the Wrangell Mountains, then enter the rapids of the Tana Canyon, known for large holes and huge, long wave trains. The canyon ends and camp is reached about 5-6 miles later. (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Day 4 – The Tana River flows into the Chitina River and flattens out offering opportunities for fossil hunting during the lunch stop. Camp near the confluence of the Chitina and Nizina rivers. (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Trip Name: Grand Canyon Hike & Colorado River Rafting

Experience the Grand Canyon, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World and a National Parks icon, and the legendary Colorado River in two magnificent, life changing ways. This 8 day trip begins with a 10 mile hike from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon down the Bright Angel Trail through eons of geologic time to Phantom Ranch on the mighty Colorado River where your adrenaline-charged river trip begins. Your journey ends 135 miles downriver at Diamond Creek. Along the way, there are many opportunities for hiking up into spectacular side canyons.

The rapids of the Colorado River are renowned for their radically varying degrees of difficulty and the River has been given its own rapids classification system from 1 (easy) to 10 (most difficult), while all other rivers are classified from Class I to Class VI.

Itinerary

NOTE: Because there are many wonderful side canyons from which to choose to hike into and riverside beaches for camping, no two trips will be identical, however, your itinerary will look something like the following:

Day 1 – Meet your guide early in the morning on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon and begin hiking down through billions of years of earth’s geologic history. You’ll arrive around midday at Phantom Ranch and your raft launch area where you’ll board your raft with your guides and begin your memorable trip down the legendary Colorado River. (lunch, dinner)

Day 2 – Today you’ll enter the take on a series of heartpounding rapids, some of which are known as the “Jewels” with names like Crystal – Class 10, Sapphire – Class 7, and Ruby – Class 6-7. (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Day 3 – In addition to riding some Class 4 to Class 9 rapids, you’ll have the opportunity to hike up into a beautiful green spot called Elves Chasm created by Royal Arch Creek with waterfall, flowers, and extensive travertine deposits. (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Day 4 – Today you’ll ride Class 4 to Class 7 rapids, then float the Middle Granite Gorge where the river cuts into the bottom and oldest layer of the Grand Canyon, before taking on some Class 5 to Class 9 rapids. You’ll also have the opportunity to hike a couple of very pretty side canyons with pools, waterfalls and beautifully sculpted narrows. (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Day 5 – Ride through Granite Narrows, where the Colorado River is just 76 feet wide, its narrowest point in the Grand Canyon. Hike to Deer Creek Falls. (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Day 6 – Raft through Class 3 to Class 7 rapids then stop for a hike up Olo Canyon or Matkat Canyon or continue on river to Havasupai Canyon renowned for its turquoise blue travertine pools and waterfalls. (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Day 7 – As you ride downriver you’ll pass Vulcan’s Anvil, an ancient lava vent rising up in the middle of the river. Then it’s time to ride the notorious Class 10 Lava Falls. Day 8 – As you get back into the raft for one last ride through the rapids into the Lower Granite Gorge to the take out point at Diamond Creek, you’ll be sad to see this awesome adventure end.  You’ll be shuttled  to the town of Peach Springs on the South Rim to clean up and have lunch, then you’ll be transported to Las Vegas where your tour will end. Day 4 – Opportunity to hike up into Nankoweap Canyon to the ancient graneries used by the Ancestral Puebloan/Anasazi Indians. Float past the confluence of the Colorado and Little Colorado rivers. During spring snowmelt and summer storms the Little Colorado carries a tremendous amount of silt and is muddy brown. In dry spells, it is a mineral laden turquoise blue. (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Day 5 – Ride the Class 6 to Class 8 rock garden rapids – Unkar, Nevills, and Hance. Enter Upper Granite Gorge and see the Great Unconformity.. This represents a gap of 1.7 billion year in geologic with many layers additional of rock missing between between the Unkar Group and those immediately under it from the Lower Precambrian Period. Your ride intensifies as the Canyon’s walls close in and you enter Sockdolager (Knockout Blow) – Class 8-9, Grapevine – Class 8, and Zoraster – Class 5-8 rapids. (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Day 6 – You’ll have the opportunity to hike, make phone calls, buy postcards and souvenirs at Phantom Ranch before you get back in the rafts and tackle Bright Angel – Class 4, Pipe Springs – Class 4-5, and Horn Creek – Class 8 rapids. (breakfast, lunch, dinner)
