Itinerary

wine4

Day 1 The Mission: Our riding starts with the beautiful and rural Puketapu loop – a favorite ride of the Hawke’s Bay Ramblers Cycling Club. We’ll dine tonight at Mission Estate – the birthplace of New Zealand wine, whose founders built the first winery in Hawke’s Bay in 1851.

Day 2 Hawke’s Bay: Spin through the beautiful Tuki Tuki River Valley, past vineyards and outstanding river panoramas. For those looking for added challenge, we’ve included the legendary Te Mata Peak which rises 1,290 feet above the surrounding plain – a real blast on the downhill! We will also enjoy a fascinating, educational tour of a winery museum that will continue to whet our appetites, and lunch at the renowned Te Awa Shingle Estate restaurant will reward us.

Day 3 Tararua: Today we make our way south via transfer and cycle through the Tararua region and into Wairarapa; giving you the opportunity to ride as many miles or few as you like. The planned route is 75km through interesting and changeable farmland to the Botanical Gardens in rural Masterton.

Day 4 Tablelands: The tablelands loop is a favorite with the locals, and international race directors. Pretend you’re racing in the UCI Tour of Wellington, before collapsing at Coney Wines for award-winning wines, succulent cuisine and amusing tales from the irrepressible owner!

Day 5 Wellington Harbour: A shorter ride today around the Miramar Peninsula provides a picturesque prelude to the nations’ capitol. We’ll take it easy today with regular stops at famous coffee houses along the route. Tonight, we’ll dine in a chic inner city establishment.

Optional afternoon activities: Take in Te Papa, the national Museum; Visit the Weta Cave (creative enclave of Lord of the Rings film director Peter Jackson); Enjoy a well-earned massage in one of the many urban spa sanctuaries; or Shop.

Day 6 The “Sounds”: After sailing to the South Island on an inter-island ferry this morning, this afternoon you’ll ride “one of the most scenic roads on earth” – the beautiful Queen Charlotte Drive. It features New Zealand native bush, views across the fiords and endless vantage points. Then we’ll cap off a great day by dining with a local winemaker.

Day 7 Vineyards and Vistas: Spin through the vines that produce international acclaimed Sauvignon Blanc; finishing with tastings at Cloudy Bay winery (perhaps NZ’s most well known estate) and lunch at the Allan Scott Winery. We’ll say farewell at Blenheim airport where you can catch an internal flight to Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch – Internal NZ airfare is included in tour price.
