Extreme Veracruz I (6 Days/5 Nights) & II (5 Days/4 Nights- Expediciones Mexico Verde

This trip provides a fairly high degree of physical challenge, but also immerses you in nature, wildlife, culture, and amazing history of the state of Veracruz.

ITINERARY – Starts/Ends in Veracruz

Day 1: Arrival at Veracruz Airport- San Juan de Ulua – Veracruz Aquarium – Transfer to Mexico Verde (Jalcomulco)

Your morning arrival and greeting at Veracruz International Airport.  Breakfast at La Parroquia, world renowned for their Coffee Lechero (coffee w/ milk) and their method of serving it: A glass tumbler is filled halfway with brewed coffee and place in front of you on the table.  Your waiter will be hold a kettle of hot steamed milk about 3 feet above the glass of coffee.  Then he will pour the hot milk from that height in a perfect stream into your glass of coffee, not splashing one single drop.  After breakfast, we’ll tour the Spanish fortress  San Juan de Ulua which was used to defend the entrance to Veracruz against invaders coming into the city from the Gulf of Mexico.  After that, we’ll tour the Veracruz Aquarium, the largest aquarium in Latin America, and transfer to the town of Jalcomulco, in the beautiful mountainous interior of the state of Veracruz,  where we’ll check into our suites, each with private bathroom with rainshower, at the  luxury permanent tented camp (think African safari tents) at Mexico Verde.  (D)

Day 2: Whitewater Rafting Pescados Section, Rio Antigua – Mountain Biking – Temazcal Ritual

Jalcomulco, located on the banks of the Rio Antigua – Mexico’s best whitewater river, is the whitewater rafting capital of Mexico with Class IV and V rapids during the rainy season (June to mid-October).  Rapids outside of the rainy season are Class III and IV.  After a hearty breakfast, we have an extensive water safety and paddling instruction session, and then we transfer to the put in location, team up and begin the paddling a good section of the river.  After the rafting we transfer back to camp for lunch.  In the afternoon we will mountain bike in the hills.  In the evening, we’ll experience the pre-Hispanic ritual of the temazcal (Mayan sweat lodge) under the guidance of a shaman.  (B, L, D)

Day 3: Mountain Hiking – Relaxation & Massage – Evening Bonfire

After breakfast, we’ll hike in the mountains to a natural spring where you’ll have the opportunity to swim and enjoy the beautiful surroundings.  Afternoon free to relax.   Enjoy a late afternoon massage.  Then after dinner,  you’ll be treated to a bonfire around which to sit and chat with your fellow adventurers.   (B, L, D)

Day 4: Rappelling the Canyons of Xico – Coatepec, Coffee Capital of Veracruz

After breakfast we will head to Xico, renowned for its delicious mole and torito drink, magnificent canyons  with waterfalls, and cultural importance as one of Mexico’s Magic Towns (Pueblos Magicos).  After a tour of the town, we’ll rappel 250 ft along a waterfall down into a canyon. After lunch, we’ll head to Coatepec, another beautiful Magic Town, the coffee capital of Veracruz.  After a tour of this beautiful town, and its coffee museum, we’ll go back to Mexico Verde for our final night there.  (B, L, D)

Day 5: Cempoala Archaeological Zone – Mangroves Kayaking – Transfer to Veracruz City

Early breakfast and departure from Mexico Verde then transfer to the village of Zempoala for a tour of the impressive ruins of Cempoala.  As the capital city of the ancestral Totonacs from 900 A.D. to 1521 A.D.,  Cempoala was the most important ancestral city in the coastal area of Veracruz.  One of its most striking features is a set of huge staggered rings that are thought to have been built to measure time.  From Cempoala, we’ll go up to the mangroves of La Mancha, rich in bird and wildlife, to enjoy a guided kayak excursion.  Late afternoon, we’ll transfer to our accommodation at the oceanfront Hotel Camino Real in Boca del Rio, Veracruz.  (B, L, D)

Day 6: Transfer Hotel- Veracruz Airport

Breakfast, then transfer to Veracruz airport for your onward flight.  End of tour.  (B)

NOTE: Extreme Veracruz II – 5 days/4 nights, is a shorter version of the Extreme Veracruz I itinerary. The only difference between the two versions of this itinerary is that Extreme Veracruz II eliminates the the hike and evening massage that occur on Day 3 of Extreme Veracruz I. Price for the shorter Extreme Veracruz II 5 Days/4 Nights itinerary is USD $1,170 per person, based on double occupancy. If single occupancy is desired, price is $1,350 per person.
