Kilimanjaro Machame Route Climb & Tanzania Wildlife Safari

East Africa

Guided Mount Kilimanjaro Climbs (19, 340 ft. summit elev.)

15 Days - Kilimanjaro Machame Route Climb & Tanzania Wildlife Safari  -   Trek to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain on the African continent, and the highest stand alone mountain in the world - rising 15,100 feet above the surrounding plains with spectacular views northeastern Tanzania and southwestern Kenya.  This itinerary incorporates more rest and acclimatization days, which together make up the critical difference that enables climbers to remain healthy on the mountain and successfully make the summit.   After completing the Kili trek relax and experience Maasai culture and Africa’s legendary wildlife and big game animals up close on a 4 day East Africa safari.  Very strenuous.

ITINERARY

Day 1 – Depart US for Kilimanjaro International Airport in Tanzania.

Day 2– Your international flight arrives at Kilimanjaro International Airport.  Transfer to your hotel in Arusha, Tanzania and overnight.

Day 3 – Meet your guides and fellow Kili trekkers as you spend some time today sightseeing.  After returning to the hotel, all equipment will be thoroughly checked and we will discuss the trip and Leave No Trace environmental ethics.  (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Day 4 – Today we check out of our hotel and travel to the Machame trailhead (5,800 ft. elevation) in Kilimanjaro National Park.  Here we register with the Park Service, and meet our porters who will carry all of our gear, set up all of our camps, and prepare all of our meals while we are on the mountain.  We then begin our 7-hour climb up the mountain through the rainforest to the Machame Camp at 10,000 ft. elev. where we will camp for the night.  (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Day 5 – We leave the Machame Camp, go through a small valley, and begin ascending up out of the forest to the moors.  We cross the Shira Plateau to the Shira Camp at 12,300 ft. elev. where we make camp for the night.  (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Day 6 – This morning we cross a ridge, taking in the views of the Tanzania plains far below as we climb to 14,800 ft. elev.  where we will break for lunch and gaze at the ancient, glacial Breach Wall, the largest wall of ice and rock in Africa.   After lunch we begin the descent to Barranco Camp at 12,800 ft. elev. where we will sleep this evening. (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Day 7 – Today we climb up and over the Great Barranco Wall to 14,500 ft. elevation before passing below the Breach Wall on our descent to Karanga Camp, our campsite at 13,000 ft. elev. (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Day 8 – Our climb from Karanga Camp up onto high desert plateau to Barafu Camp at 14,560 ft. elev. take us about 6 hours.    It is here that we prepare our gear and ourselves for the summit attempt on Kili’s Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, which we will begin in the very early hours tomorrow morning.  (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Day 9 - We awaken at midnight and prepare to begin our summit attempt at 2:00 a.m.  As we begin the climb, our headlamps light the way until predawn light reflects off the African plains.  We follow a distinct ridge to reach the crater rim, then we hike northwest along the rim to Uhuru Peak.

We have climbed to 19,340 ft. elev. and are now standing on the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro!   As we revel in the moment, unparalleled sights lay before us - Mt. Kenya, 17,058 ft. elev., the second highest mountain in Africa, and the seemingly infinite East African plains far, far below.  After our short time on the summit we hike back down to Barafu Camp for our last night on the mountain. (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Day 10 – We descend Kilimanjaro’s southern side via the steep Mweka route through a very thick jungle to the Mweka Gate, 6,000 ft. elev., where our driver is waiting to take us back to our hotel in Arusha for a celebration dinner.  (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Day 11 – Today we begin our safari as we drive into Tarangire National Park, known for its baobab trees, and great numbers of wildebeest, zebras, elephants, eland, and oryx to  our very comfortable safari lodge.  (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Day 12 – This morning we drive into Lake Manyara National Park where we see flamingoes, giraffes, cheetahs, elephants, baboons, tree-climbing lions, hippos.  Before departing the Lake Manyara area we might visit a Maasai Tribe village to learn more about their culture and lifestyle.    We then drive on to  the Ngorongoro Crater, at the eastern edge of the Serengeti, to our deluxe safari lodge on the crater’s rim where we will spend the night.  (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Day 13 – This morning we drive down into The Ngorongoro Crater – the largest unbroken caldera on earth, and  home to the highest concentration of wildlife on the entire African continent.  On the crater floor we see wildebeest, zebra, gazelle, buffalo, eland, kongoni, and warthogs grazing, with lions, leopards, cheetahs, and hyenas prowling about.    We may also see elephants, hippos, and black rhinos.  After lunch we take a game drive into the vast Serengeti National Park, famous for its annual wildebeest and zebra migration on our way to the safari lodge where we will stay this evening.  (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Day 14 – This morning we enjoy a spectacular sunrise balloon ride over the Serengeti plain.  After lunch at the lodge we fly back to Arusha for a farewell dinner, and transfer back to Kilimanjaro International Airport for our late evening departures back home. (breakfast, lunch, dinner)
